The Centre for Government Reform recently uncovered a range of spending from Arts Council England that has been characterised as ‘an appalling waste of taxpayers’ money’. The funding for projects such as the Migration Matters Festival and Panjabi Princesses Play comes at a time when traditional museums are being forced to close due to lack of funds.
Our CEO Ameer Kotecha is quoted in the article: ‘Arts Council England should be preserving our island story, not funding pet projects that flatter a narrow set of fashionable causes.
‘Every pound spent on niche identity projects that advance woke ideology is a pound that is not spent on keeping the doors of a local museum highlighting our proud history open.
‘Museums are the institutions that anchor communities and give people a genuine connection to our shared history and culture. They deserve to be the priority, not an afterthought squeezed out by whatever cause happens to be fashionable in Whitehall this year.
‘These are the choices of an organisation that has lost sight of what it is for. Until that changes, we will keep losing the institutions that tell us who we are, while public money is frittered away on causes that speak to almost no one.’
